Sophie Meena is a French-born, self-taught oil painter whose work explores the space between nature, memory, imagination, and the unknown. Her paintings are inhabited by abundant flora, fantastical plants and flowers, vast skies, and dream-like landscapes that seem to belong to worlds beyond our own.
Her relationship with the natural world deepened while living in the Catskill Mountains of New York. Surrounded by forests and changing seasons, she developed an intimate connection with the plant kingdom that would later become central to her artistic practice. Today, the plants she paints have moved beyond botanical observation. They transform into unfamiliar species, flowers, vines, and vegetation that feel as though they might have grown somewhere else entirely.
Inspired by medieval botanical imagery, illuminated manuscripts, mythology, and dreams, Sophie is fascinated by the way earlier cultures imagined and documented the natural world. She draws from this visual language while allowing her own botanical worlds to emerge intuitively, creating a meeting point between something ancient and something yet undiscovered.
Trained as a goldsmith, Sophie first expressed her artistic vision through dream-like jewelry featuring beetles before discovering oil painting as her preferred medium. Her paintings are rarely fully planned. Instead, she allows each piece to reveal itself through the process, following forms, colors, and images as they appear.
This intuitive practice is closely connected to her fascination with perception and the boundaries of reality. The landscapes and strange botanical forms she paints can feel less like inventions than memories of places she cannot quite locate, as though they might belong to another world, another time, or a reality existing alongside our own.
Through her work, Sophie invites viewers into these imagined ecosystems and encourages them to wonder about what may exist beyond the familiar and visible.
Originally from France, Sophie now lives and works in Louisville, Kentucky.
